Classroom Happenings for May 21st – 25th, 2018
Note: I will be completing all final assessments this week. Some of my students have not yet met the end-of-year goal for reading and math fact fluency so I will continue to work with them this week. Please continue to practice reading and math fact fluency at home this week. The goal for reading is 60 words read per minute. The goal for math is approximately 45 addition math facts within a two-minute time period. If you would like to know where your child stands, please send me a Dojo message or email me.
Later this week, I will be sending home our sight word list from first grade. These are the high-frequency/sight words that we have learned. Any circled words are words that your child is still struggling with. It is also a good idea to review ALL of these words periodically over summer break as they will be expected to automatically know them (no sounding out) in 2nd grade. Any questions, please let me know.
Carnival will be held this Friday, May 25th. Please dress your child in Gym clothes with socks and sneakers. It is looking like the weather is going to be sunny and warm! Please apply sunscreen to your child in the morning before sending him/her to school. If you wish, you can pack the sunscreen for reapplication after lunch. The only lunch being offered on Carnival day is a Hot Dog. Please keep this in mind when deciding to have your child pack or buy a lunch.

Monday – (Day 3) Computers – Review List 21 spelling words. Read small decodable book “Brave Nell” focusing on phonics skill – three letter consonant blends.
Tuesday (Day 4) Music – Review List 21 spelling words. Review addition math facts.
Wednesday (Day 5) Art – Study List 21 spelling words. Review reading words on p. 93 and read A Trip to Washington DC. Reading skill to work on is Facts and Details. Final spelling, phonics, and reading comprehension tests tomorrow.
Thursday (Day 6) Library – Review addition math facts. Final fact timed assessment will be tomorrow.
Friday (Non-rotation) Carnival Please check the Friday Folder for important papers and tests. Sign any stamped papers and return to school on Tuesday.
*Friday is a Non-rotation day so we will have Gym class on Tuesday, May 29th.
Have a wonderful week!

Classroom Happenings for May 13th – 18th, 2018
Note: Today we began spelling, phonics, and reading comprehension for our last story “A Trip to Washington D.C.”. I will give the final assessments for this story (and the school year) at some point next week. WooHoo! Please continue to practice reading fluency at home. Students should be reading 60 or more words per minute. We will also have our last math assessment for the year sometime next week.
Our DIBELS benchmark reading assessment will be given this week by our school Reading Specialists. The best way to have prepared for this is by having your child read to you each night and reviewing reading/spelling words often.
Please make sure that if your child still has library books checked out, that they are returned to school by Thursday when we will have Library class. There will be no more book circulation for this school year.
Thank you to all of the mothers and grandmothers who came in for our Mother’s Day tea party. I hope you enjoyed that time with your child/grandchild and will cherish that memory for a very long time. We loved having you and helping to make your day extra special.
